WCAG (Level AAA) SC 1.2.7 Extended Audio Description (Prerecorded)

WCAG (Level AAA) SC 1.2.7 Extended Audio Description (Prerecorded) (w3.org)

Issue description

WCAG 1.2.7, “Extended Audio Description (Prerecorded)” recognizes that sometimes standard audio descriptions, which fit within the natural pauses of a video’s dialogue, aren’t enough to convey all the visual information. This is especially true for videos with:

  • Fast-paced action: Where a lot happens visually in a short time.
  • Complex visuals: Like detailed diagrams, intricate scenes, or rapid cuts.
  • Minimal dialogue: Where there aren’t enough natural pauses to insert descriptions.

This Level AAA criterion requires that, in these cases, extended audio description be provided. This means pausing the video at certain points to allow time for more detailed descriptions. Why this matters:

  • Provides a complete understanding: People who are blind or have low vision rely on audio descriptions to understand what’s happening visually. Extended descriptions ensure they don’t miss crucial information.
  • Reduces cognitive load: Trying to process rapid descriptions within short pauses can be mentally taxing. Pausing the video gives users time to absorb the information.

However, it’s important to note that pausing the video can disrupt the flow for users who don’t need audio descriptions. Therefore, it’s crucial to:

  • Provide a way to turn it on/off: Give users control over whether they want the extended descriptions.
  • Consider offering alternative versions: Offer a version with extended descriptions and one without.

Essentially, 1.2.7 aims for the highest level of accessibility by recognizing that some videos need more than just basic audio descriptions to be fully inclusive.
